Moving Checklist

Moving always brings mixed emotions – it can be both very exciting and stressful at the same time. To help, here are some useful tips that will help make your move efficient and trouble-free.

4 to 6 Weeks before moving

  • Schedule your mail to be forwarded to your new address with Canada Post. Arrange to forward your mail. You can do it online or in person at any postal outlet and ensure that important mail follows you wherever you go. Register for Forward Your Mail service 30 days or sooner before moving day to focus on other moving tasks. You’ll enjoy knowing that important mail will make the move with you. Here is a link to get you to Canada Post and a downloadable form you can print and take to a post office near by you. Note: If you are moving to an acreage make sure you go to the post office of the nearest town.

  • Notify your Financial Institutions, Bank Accounts, Credit cards, Investments.

  • Shop for your home insurance, and notify your current insurance company you have sold your home if applicable and the date your home sale is closing. If you are financing your new home request your insurance agent to send a copy of the binder to your lawyer as it is a requirement by the mortgage company.

  • Arrange for home security if desired.

2 to 3 Weeks before moving

  • Get boxes and moving supplies

  • Arrange phone service at your new home

  • Take unwanted items to charity and/or dump

  • Dispose of household chemicals properly (old paint, caustic cleaners, etc.). Take these to the local Toxic Waste Centre

  • Arrange the return of any cable TV equipment

  • Complete necessary change of address forms:

  • If necessary, do the following:

    • Make travel arrangements and reservations.

    • Arrange transfer of car insurance & license plates.

    • Notify kids’ schools, transfer records.

    • Register at new school.

    • Get copies of medical and dental records; if you have pets, get copies of veterinary records.

  • Utilities. Find out what utilities you’ll need (electricity, gas, oil, water & sewage, etc.) and arrange to have them start up on the day you move in. Call your current utility providers to cancel existing service at midnight on your move-out day.

  • Communications like internet, phone, and cable often come in one bundle of services. Call the providers in your new area to find the best deal. Generally, the more services you use, the less expensive each becomes. Your new provider can advise you on the data download pack that will best suit your needs. 8 to 14 days before moving

  • Return borrowed items.

  • Arrange connection of utilities at new place.

  • Retrieve loaned items

  • Arrange disconnection of utilities at old place.

  • Arrange for major appliances to be moved, if necessary

  • Dispose of all flammable materials.

2 to 7 days before moving

  • Determine what you can bring with you if travelling by car, plane, train, or bus.

  • Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries that you’ll need the first day in your new home.

  • Prepare “installed items” that you’re bringing (TV antenna or shelves*).

  • Pack a special box with other essentials you’ll need for the first few days and marks this box “Do Not Move”.

Prior to Election

Update your information with voterlink, you will need to have your drivers licence or Alberta ID on had. Several ways to update; through Elections Canada Website, voterlink portal, or call elections AB at 780-427-7191.

  • Boat Permit Via the Pleasure Craft Electronic Licensing System (PCELS), Or by mail

  • Employer, Notify the HR department

  • Pharmacist, It is important to talk to your pharmacist to transfer your file to a new pharmacy if required. Please note that some prescriptions are not
    transferable, and you might need a new prescription.

  • Dentist and Doctors or Specialists-On your next visit/call Simply mention it to the receptionist

  • Library-On your next visit/call Simply mention it to the receptionist

  • Alberta Student Aid-Online through your Student Aid account

  • Car Dealership and Manufacturer so you receive important updates and reminders for your vehicle.

  • Union-How to change address with your union
